‘Ghost Whale’ (2022) is a decision-making game that is designed and played in Microsoft Excel. Through this game, I attempt to bring to the attention of the general public the contradictions within current approaches to combating climate change and to remind them that nature is once again reduced to "assets" and "services" for human benefit. My project was inspired by the book The Value of a Whale authored by Adrienne Buller, who brought up the recent research done by IMF that a whale can absorb 33 billion tones of GHS (Green House Gases) in a life span of 60 years. It seems that we constantly consider nature as shapeless abstract ‘thereness’ that is ‘away’ from us. Perhaps the very reason for these contradictions is that we forget they are complex systems of which we are a part.
