Hear Shanghai

Soundscape/Map/City Plan/Installation
2020
‘Hear Shanghai’ (2020) is a creative practice that generates a sonic map of Shanghai, arguing that the soundscape of a city is formed as a result of political urban planning decisions. This project began with the question “Why can’t I hear bird calls in my neighborhood?” As it progressed, the research investigations shifted to more complex and thought-provoking ones like “Why sounds are fragmented in a big city?” and “Who has designed what sounds we hear?” The installation invites the audience to hear the sound from the corresponding locations as they move in front of the map and imagine what kind of place it is, and the noise can be broken up if they approach and touch the boxes.
